University College Dublin

UCD is one of the best & coolest universities in Dublin. *wink* however i do like to remind fellow juniors to forget anything about UCD being the easiest universities (compared to other univs) because A42 NOT. each univ has its own perks in terms of our method in learning. for medicine specifically, i would say that UCD's system makes things easier for those who love to study on their own. meaning those who are able to manage their time on their own.

so if u think you are one, then UCD is the right place for you. but if not, then prepare yourself to be one who's fully responsible and disciplined in managing your life. kiss spoon-fed lectures goodbye alright? :)

Facilities

right now im proud to say we have a cool and lovely surau of our own. *thanks to ISOC (UCD islamic society). other than that we have huge libraries with all the aura of universities that you can ask for. and people would line for it during the exam weeks.

we do have a gym, but it's not free.it's huge though. but one can always jog around the ever huge compound of UCD should you feel the need to lose the extra pounds. heheh.
we have some small coffee shops / cafe's for you to head to during breaks. but malays normally ends up bringing home-made meals like nasi to satisfy our tummy.

Course

since it's in Dublin, Ireland, the main course would definitely be MEDICINE. *no surprise there*

in a lecture theatre, malaysians would fill up about 1/3 of the lecture hall. so we have to mix and mingle with the Irish kids on our own. try and adjust ourselves with their cliques. ;)

but normally by the 2nd semester of 3rd year, the amount of malaysians left would be around less than 20. max 15 maybe? because those are all that's left for those doing a full 5-years course. it's a sad yearly event when a bulk of friends left us here. *i will be one to be left behind soon too. T_T

Accommodation

normally for first years, we will have our accomodation in the UCD hall. (hall here meant somewhat like a apartment?) 2/3/4 bedrooms. some are single rooms, and few are double beds.

there are 2 halls that are occupied by malaysians, Belgrove + Mervillle. but have their own perks. normally those who wants to live with JUST malaysians would opt for belgrove, and those who wants to try living with the Irish would opt for Merville. but these changes every year, so im not quite sure what happens next year, but it's normally okay. no big problems encountered. ;)

and by 2nd year, everybody will end up moving out, looking for our own houses through this website called daft.ie. no worries, brothers and sisters (your seniors will help). just ask us. we'd be more than happy to suggest you places.

Life As A Muslim

it's hard to explain this in details, because there are sooo much things happening here.

but put it simply, there are so much opportunities that you can gain here. the close-knit community of Muslims, the weird experiences of having to explain things that we usually take for granted like wearing the hijab whatnot.

the best ones would be being able to listen to talks or meeting people that you will definitely NEVER come across in malaysia. listening to their experiences what not.

so be prepared to brace yourself and live the life of a true muslim!! :) it's the best experience ever!

Food

a lot of halal food around. be it cooked meals, or things you need to cook.

but the meals are quite expensive if one compared to those in UK. so eating home is a must.

the perencah2 is only for those who does not yet have the confidence in cooking. but believe me, you'll gain the confidence within a week! so no worries :)

Malaysian Community

:) close knit brothers & sisters who are always there for you. be sure to pick the right clique insyaAllah :)
