University of Leicester is one of the homiest university in terms of living environment. This is because the malaysian community in Leicester usually will know each other as the number of Malaysian undergraduates studying in Leicester is not that many but enough to make you feel at home inshaAllah. We also have friendly malaysian postgraduate students too.

Course

There are approximately 70 malaysian undergraduates studying in Leicester who take a variety of courses including Medicine, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Financial Maths, Media etc.


Accommodation

There are university halls, private halls and houses to be rented throughout the study period. Among the favourite places that Malaysian students like to rent include:
-Private Halls: Oxford Court, Western Challenge (these halls can be applied in groups, and the price is quite reasonable)
-University Halls: Opal Court (very near to medical school, but quite expensives), Nixon Court
-Houses: (can inform us here, if you would like us to find a house for you)

Usually first year students prefer to live in halls, then during second year move to a house a private halls. But as time goes by, it is not a rarity anymore for first years to live in private halls or houses, as we have quite a number of them this year and last year. But, it is advisable for you to let us know in advance if you prefer to live in private halls or houses in your first year so that we can provide guidance and assistance inshaAllah.



Life as a Muslim

Life as a Muslim in Leicester is very easy alhamdulillah. This is because Leicester consists of many Muslims locals like the Pakistans, Arabs etc. Big Islamic events like the fasting month and Eid celebration is not uncommon among Leicester locals here. You can even take Eid leave from the university! In terms of performing the obligatory prayers, there are many mosques in Leicester if you want to join the Jamaah prayers, as well as the Praying room for both sisters and brothers to pray in the university building.

The cost of living is quite cheap in Leicester compared to other places in the UK. In Leicester, we seldom travel by bus to go to town centre as it is quite nearby.


Halal Food

There are many halal food in Leicester as well as Asian food. This is because there are many Asian people too in Leicester. Among the famous instant food that Malaysian likes to eat include the Maryland, Royale and others. There are too many to be listed here. One thing for sure is that you don't have to worry about finding cheap plus halal delicious food in Leicester as there are a lot of them here!

In terms of Malaysian food, there are many Chinese shops that sell Malaysian products which include Kicap Abhal, Maggi, Maggi Sauce etc too.


Malaysian Community

"Undergraduates usually will be registered under the Leicester University Malaysian Society (LUMS), whereas postgraduates will be registered under MASLEICS. LUMS and MASLEICS usually will hold Eid celebration party together too.

Also, for medical students especially, you can take part in the IMAM (Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia) activities.

On other hand, there is also Islamic organisation like IKRAM (formerly known as MSM aka Majlis Syura Muslimun) who will provide activities like islamic circle, winter gathering, spring and summer camp, Palestine Mercy Mission (Misi Kasih Palestin,MKP) etc
