University of Surrey

Are you looking for a university that has the largest number of graduates employed in the UK? Or a university that offer a Professional Training Year during your undergraduate’s studies? If yes, then you definitely have to come to University of Surrey.

At the University of Surrey, there are currently 145 different nationalities so you will be certain to get a truly international education. And attention to those who love the city of London, it only takes 40 minutes to get to London by train from Guildford! It is also close to Heathrow and Gatwick airport so for those who love travelling, this is kind of bonus for you guys.



Facilities



University of Surrey is a campus style university that doesn’t require you to use transport to travel from one building to the other. All the buildings are situated in one region and not scattered. (You can walk between both ends of the university in 20 minutes. - see how much times and energy you can save if you choose us!  )
There are wide ranges of facilities available to satisfy the students. For those who love sport so much, there is a newly build Surrey Sport Park. It’s not a normal gym, it has all sort of sports that suit all levels of ability throughout its facilities. The facilities including:

1) Health and fitness centre (unbelievable enormous gym)

2) Swimming pool (if you want to learn swimming, there is swimming class available)

3) badminton, tennis, squash court.

4) Climbing centre and many more.
In short, there is something for everyone.

And of course, we do have library as other universities but you guys are lucky since you will be using a new library that will be operating from September 2011 onwards. Our library is fully equipped with books, journals, electronic journals, computers, free wi-fi, food and drinks area and also shower room. Plus, the university library will usually open for 24 hours during the exam season so you guys can stay at the library for revising as long you want.



We also have Islamic Prayer Centre that is fully equipped with wudu’ and toilet facilities. The student will be notified with the jamaah timing (including subuh) so you don’t have to worry about missing the jemaah prayer. For brothers, the Jumaat prayer is performed in the university hall.

Other facilities including:
1) Hillside Restaurant, Young’s Kitchen, Pizzaman (the chicken here is halal and also sell Malaysian food sometimes.)
2) University Lake, a place to rest your mind.
3) University field.



Course

There are 44 courses offered by the university. Most of the Malaysian here that hold MARA and JPA’s scholarships is taking the engineering courses. (Mechanical, medical and chemical) There are also Malaysian with Ministry of Education scholars that undergo chemistry, physics and mathematics courses. Besides, there are also Malaysian doing microbiology, biotechnology, economics, tourism management and music.



Accommodation



The first years and final year’s student will be staying inside the university while the second year’s students have to stay outside the university. However, you certainly don’t have to worry about the accommodation since the international student will be prioritised while applying for the accommodation. There are wide ranges of price bands available for the student to choose from. The prices are in a range of £300 to £500 per months, depends on the bands that you choose. Usually, the Malaysian second years will be staying in the university’s accommodation outside the university. The price is roughly £300 per months and it is quite far from the university.(30 minutes by bus) However, we will be given a free bus pass that is worth £150 per year. So no worries, your life will remain simple even living outside of the uni  .



Life as a Muslim

Life as a Muslim couldn’t be easier here. You really don’t have to worry about the spiritual needs, since we have an active Islamic Society(ISOC) in Surrey. There are many programmes offered by ISOC including the annual Islamic Awareness Week programme. You can join the programme as well as helping out the society to make it successful. Basically, you still can have your Muslim life in Malaysia, here in University of Surrey and who knows, it might be even better, insyaAllah 




Halal Food

Are you guys thinking of just having fish throughout your life in Surrey? No worries. Halal chicken is everywhere.  You can get halal chicken from Tesco (10 minutes’ walk from the university) and also there are some groceries shop selling halal chicken and meat. Unfortunately we don’t have halal KFC or Subway here but we do have a lot of shops selling halal kebabs, pizza and spicy chicken wings!( it’s a famous food here, Malaysian love it so much ). There is also a restaurant called Matahari at the Guildford town centre run by Malaysian. The price of food there are quite expensive but still you can go there sometimes if you miss our Malaysia 

There are 2 Oriental shops in town centre selling Asian food. They have coconut milk, dried chilli, kicap cap kipas udang( manis, masin, lemak), all sorts of maggi, tomyam paste, fried rice paste and even petai! So, in short, you don’t have to worry about not having Malaysian food in Surrey, insyaAllah. 




Malaysian Community

The Malaysian Student Association(MSS) is an organisation that represent the Malaysian student in University of Surrey. It is an active organisation that planned the activities for Malaysian. The activites including MSS talk, family day and BBQ, weekly sports activites and many more.




What to Prepare

Crucial things – passport, quran etc

Foods - Instant paste and cubes, ikan bilis, dried chilli(the taste of dried chilli here is quite strange for me )
Clothes - Crucial one and one piece of jacket is enough since you can do your shopping here in the UK!
