City University London

City University London located in central London. Not that very fancy to look at, very humble looking buildings surrounded by offices so don't expect to be going to some place like in those Harry Potter movies. Its quite diverse with lots of students from asia, europe and local british students as well.

Facilities

Theres a gym nearby the university, maybe 5 minutes walk from the main building. We've got a new prayer hall in the basement but we usually prayer Jumaat prayers in the Hub. We've got a library as well but its not as vast or as attractive as those like Kings College or LSE, only 6 levels and a bit shabby looking but it serves its purpose well. No swimming pool though...

Course

Usually Malaysians who come to City University are those who take Actuarial Science because thats what City University is well known for. However there are some students who take accounting and engineering subjects at City. Not too sure about how many number of students in City, for my class there are about 15-20 Malaysian students..

Accommodation

For first year students, usually they stay at the halls of residence located close to the university. The halls are quite expensive but its close to uni and the facilities provided are not bad. Second year students usually in houses with their friends some in central london some a bit further like in zone 2 eg Finsbury Park, Camden to name a few...

Life as a Muslim

As a muslim living in London I find that its not difficult to practice Islam and still mix around with my other course mates and friends. For example, I live near a mosque so whenever we have time we go the mosque to perform jemaah prayer. Halal food is also easy to find here with lots of food like kebabs from arabic shops, we also have lots of Malaysian restaurants in London so you won't be missing much on the malaysian food though it is quite expensive. Money-wise, it is enough for you to save a bit and still have some left over for shopping and what not :)

Halal Food

As I said before its quite easy to find halal food especially in zone 2, cause thats where you can find lots of cheap halal shops eg PFC, Harput, etc. There are also halal restaurants in central london like in Edgware Road but then again its a bit pricy. You can buy halal meat in the halal butchers usually in zone 2 where many muslim communities live, there are also halal butchers located in central london. You can always go to MSD it you want to get your Malaysian food fix :)

Malaysian Community

Malaysian society is growing bigger and we are holding some events throughout the year, such as potluck, City university Malaysian Games etc.

What to prepare

Umm well don't have to bring lots of clothes cause you can buy it here (its quite cheap la..). Bawakla serunding ke utk makan sini. Periuk nasik bolehla bawak satu yg kecik utk masak nasik when you're here, tp periuk masak lauk sume hang beli je kat sini dari argos camtu xyah nk berat2kan beg tuh hahahaha. Study accessories bawak la skit cukup utk one month ke camtu, nnti bole beli kat sini. Just bawak basic necessities other stuff you can get it locally from around here.
